Job Summary:
The Communications Officer will:
- Work on the development of projects, with an emphasis on written content for various communications products, which improve biodiversity and prevent and reduce the invasion and spread of invasive species in Canada
- Contribute to education and communications planning and to the development of articles, social media, digital and multimedia content, and other documents as required
- Have the opportunity to participate in public community outreach activities, virtually or in person, to increase awareness and promote community action against the introduction and spread of invasive species
Key duties of the Communications Officer include:
- Development of written content for a variety of print, digital, and other online platforms that will provide naturalists, conservationists, and recreational land and water users with the opportunity to learn more about invasive species prevention and management
- Gather, research, and prepare communications materials regarding invasive species
- Support the planning and implementation of communications campaigns to help raise awareness and encourage action towards managing invasive species
- Assist with the planning and implementation of graphic design and interactive media production
- Support the implementation of social media plans and support social media accounts with content
- Take photos and shoot video to support the production of graphic and video content
- Generate plain language content for ISC publications
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- The candidate should be enrolled in a post-secondary academic study or have relevant experience in a field such as environmental science communications, or digital marketing communications
Minimum Competencies:
- Strong writing skills to synthesize complex information in a way that is interesting and accessible for non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office software and Adobe software is considered an asset
- Knowledge of invasive species issues
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated high standard of excellence with their work processes and outcomes, speak and write clearly and accurately, be helpful and teamwork-oriented, manage time well, and be receptive to feedback
Preferred Qualifications:
- Job experience in the development, coordination and transfer of science-based content, and project coordination
- Demonstrated design proficiencies
- Additional experience or certification in science communications/outreach would be considered an asset

- Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment

- Assist with the planning, writing, and reviewing of scientific and technical reports and articles
- Gather, research, and help to prepare communications materials regarding invasive species
- Provide general research support to staff in day-to-day program coordination and deliverables

Job Summary
The Aquatic Invasive Species Intern will support the objectives of the Invasive Species Centre by assisting with invasive species identification, research, and reporting and related program work.
The Intern will sort and analyze water samples. The resulting data and analysis will be provided to other researchers and will support the production of peer-reviewed literature and public reports.
The Intern will gain valuable experience conducting data collection and analysis and contributing to research and reports to protect biodiversity and natural resources.
Principal Accountabilities
The Aquatic Invasive Species Intern will:
- Analyze water samples for presence or absence of zebra and quagga mussel veliger’s, and spiny water flea.
- Track zooplankton diagnostic results and create final reports for partner organizations.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe lab space.
- Maintain an inventory of environmental DNA sampling supplies and materials.
- Respond to public inquiries about aquatic invasive species.
- Support invasive species programs at the Invasive Species Centre, especially with regard to aquatics.
- Develop new aquatic invasive species outreach materials.
- Create content for the Invasive Carp Canada social media channels and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Support the Aquatics Program Coordinators with influencer outreach, social media marketing, paid advertising, especially with regards to invasive carps and invasive aquatic plants.
- Participate in the collaborative groups working to address invasive species.
- Additional duties upon request.
Qualifications
- University and college graduates who have graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university with a degree or diploma in biology or a related field.
- Candidates must be graduates of post-secondary degree or diploma programs.
- The position must provide the intern with first full-time employment in their field of study.
- Candidates are only eligible to participate in the internship program one time. If you have been an intern in the past, please identify the funder.
- Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Additional educational credentials and/or experience in natural or environmental sciences would be an asset.
Minimum Competencies
The successful candidate will have strong:

Other Requirements
- Bilingual in French, English, and/or Indigenous languages would be an asset.
- The candidate must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

- The candidate must possess a valid G Class driver’s license and be willing to travel throughout Ontario and beyond as needed (approximately 10 days total over the course of a one-year contract).
