The Invasive Species Centre is hosting the 4th annual Invasive Species Forum virtually from February 7-9 in partnership with Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The Forum brings together invasive species experts and calls attention to invasive species issues, research, and advances in prevention and management happening across Canada and in neighbouring U.S. States.

Invasive species are plants, animals, insects, and pathogens that are introduced to an area and cause harm to the environment, economy, or society. Many organizations work together to protect lands and waters in Canada from these harmful arrivals, and the Invasive Species Forum is a way to connect and share new information that will support future work.

The 2023 Forum ‘Invasive Species Action in a Changing Climate’ features over 60 expert speakers from across Canada and the United States. Climate change and invasive species are pressing threats to global ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. As a result of these threats, many beloved pastimes in Canada are impacted such as hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, and visiting local parks.

“Scientists, environmental managers, and volunteers are working hard to protect our environment from invasive species.” says Sarah Rang, Executive Director of the Invasive Species Centre. “The annual Forum provides an opportunity to bring together and showcase the incredible and innovative work of practitioners and researchers who are working to protect lands and waters in Canada from invasive species.”

The Invasive Species Forum program will feature many topics including research and management developments for forest invasive species like emerald ash borer and oak wilt, invasive plants on land and in water, aquatic invasive species like fish and invertebrates, municipal and Indigenous communities, and education, outreach and community science. Registration is free and all are welcome to attend.
The Forum will also celebrate nominees and winners of the annual Invasive Species Centre Awards, recognizing the leadership and commitment of individuals and organizations who help keep lands and waters in Canada free from invasive species.
