How can local management actions and priorities adapt as we navigate climate change? Join the Northeast RISCC for a conversation with Shikha Singh about “Japanese Stiltgrass: Lessons Learned While Managing for Stiltgrass in a Changing Environment.” After a brief presentation by Shikha on the successes and challenges of managing Japanese stiltgrass in public and private areas, we’ll invite your participation in a Q & A and discussion on how to meet these new challenges.

Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) is an annual grass species that was first documented in the United States in the early 1900s in Tennessee. It can grow quickly and out-compete native plant species, forming dense thatches and monocultures.  Shikha’s team at the Jackson, Lenawee and Washtenaw Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (JLW CISMA) has been working with partners to manage stiltgrass at both Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve and a residential property in Michigan. Shikha will share some of her experiences and observations after their management areas experienced several intense storms that allowed for favorable stiltgrass growing conditions, and discuss how it may impact future surveying and management efforts. After this brief talk, we’ll invite you to share your own experiences managing stiltgrass and other invasive species that may be influenced by increased storm frequency and intensity, and to discuss current and future solutions. 

This event is intended for municipal and local managers and invasive species practitioners, but practitioners and researchers at any level are welcome.
